NPR: SIZEMORE BUILDS A WORLD OF MONSTERS 4/28/15

"Sizemore has painted and experimented with clay for most of his life, but he is self-taught in makeup and mask-making. FANGORIA: DEMON'S ROOK REVIEW 10/8/13

"The Demon's Rook is exactly the kind of psychotronic gem we search for in no-budget/backyard/DIY horror. Director James Sizemore—wearing a vast array of horns and hats on the film including writer, star, producer and special makeup FX—is positively charged with realizing his entirely warped vision of demons, netherworlds, surf rock barn parties and a bearded savior at all, and despite no, costs. Which is to say, in the already niche world of genre film, The Demon's Rook will occupy a special place in the hearts of a select few. Interested in pushing ahead instead of looking back, The Demon's Rook wears its heart on its sleeve, but thankfully not its influences. Rather, Sizemore sets out to, and does, capture a sort of “anything goes” atmosphere that makes the lunatic work of Fulci so beloved. Employing copious blood, copious fog, copious colors and copious creatures, the film carves out its own odd occult mythology about the mother earth and the ancient magick that resides within. That magick threatens to spill over into our world entirely throughout the picture’s fantastically gory proceedings, unless lead character Roscoe, who came of age within the Earth, can stop it." -Samuel Zimmerman

THE DEMON'S ROOK PREMIERE AT FANTASIA 7/27/13

"A glimmering gem in a sea of low-budget splatter, The Demon's Rook is flat-out unlike anything previously put to film — a mindbending tour de force of DIY filmmaking that delivers in spades what films ten times its budget cannot. The fever dreams of Lucio Fulci collide with ’80s creature features in this surreal horror/fantasy... The homage-loving Sizemore has created a low-budget orgy of grue that can only be described as Return of the Living Dead by way of Jodorowsky, having lensed the entire head-scratching fantasy in his native Georgia and employing a nearly all-amateur cast and crew. The results, however, are astounding... Featuring supernatural mind melds, fog-drenched weirdness, and naked women with blood oozing from their gaping eyes, The Demon's Rook is the sort of surreal cinematic oddity that will set your head spinning while simultaneously blowing your mind with its unabashed devotion to bucking the studio system and keeping things gleefully odd." -Ted Geoghegan

HMZ FILM INTERVIEW 8/29/13

"James Sizemore’s daringly original and surreal first feature film The Demon's Rook has taken the horror world by storm. The indie horror film had its world premiere at the much coveted Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, Canada in July 2013 to overwhelmingly positive reviews. Lauded as a ‘breath of fresh air’ and ‘a mind-bending tour de force’, ‘The Demon’s Rook’ was given the honour of being officially selected for leading horror fantasy festival: Film4 Frightfest. The hype surrounding the low budget feature reached fever pitch following the Frightfest screening, with many declaring it as this year’s must see entry. The entirely hand-made special effects are an incredible testament to what can be achieved with hard work and determination."

FEARNET: DEMON'S ROOK REVIEW 8/29/13

"What is pretty much undeniable is that The Demon's Rook has a massive array of wonderfully garish practical effects. Demonic masks, zombie hordes, tons of arterial sprays and sloppy intestines, you name it. Well-designed and cleverly photographed (and often in broad daylight!), the almost non-stop carnage is clearly the star of the movie, and it's always nice to see good ol' American gore done on a tight budget and (of course) completely lacking in CGI touch-ups." -Scott Weinberg

TWITCH: DEMON'S ROOK REVIEW 8/26/13

"All the performers and supporting cast put their heart and souls into it; they match their acting to the style and level of the film without making light or fun of it. This is a rare and great case of a labour of love that is incredibly accomplished, without falling into the usual traps of DIY filmmaking. There is great time and care in this film, and above all, great fun. So sit back, relax (spliff optional) and enjoy what is sure to become a classic." -Shelagh M. Rowan-Legg
